Ski Boots - the most important part of your ski equipment
Your ski boots are the interface between you, the skis, and the terrain around you. Choosing the right ski boots can be the making or breaking of your skiing experience. So they need to be right. Selection should not be done on any other basis other than fit and feel. Only then can the superfluous choice of color, make or pattern enter into your choice.
Ski boots are an amalgamation of plastic, leather, rubber and steel that come together to act as an extension of your leg and foot and clamp it to your skis. Since you will be probably wearing these for many hours at a time they must be comfortable and yet fit firmly. If too loose they will not allow you to properly control your skis and yet if too tight they will spoil your day out or whole holiday.
The need for proper fitting by an expert is essential. The foot is a very complex structure of bones, ligaments and muscles. The ski boot must hold the foot tightly in place whilst allowing them to move and operate as your transfer pressure to different areas of the skis. Needless to say everyone has different feet with different widths lengths and with bones protruding in different measure. Even your own two feet will differ from one another. To accommodate this you need to find a suitable boot for you and you alone.
To allow for differences in feet ski boots are manufactured with a rigid plastic shell that is split. The split can be closed up with adjustable clamps on the foot and leg to take up any space in the boot. Added to this, the internal liner of softer materials such as foam, leather and textiles provide padding between your foot and the rigid plastic shell. The other padding comes from the purpose made ski sock you need on your foot. Even with all this material and adjustment available it may not be enough for some to be comfortable so the next stage is custom moulded ski boots.
